Lymphatic drainage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), is a specialized form of gentle massage that aims to stimulate the movement of lymph fluid through the body's lymphatic system. The primary goals of lymphatic drainage is to encourage the natural drainage of lymph, which carries waste products away from tissues back toward the heart.
MLD uses very light, gentle pressure and rhythmic circular movements applied to the skin. The pressure is much lighter than traditional massage. MLD specifically aims to stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the movement of lymph fluid to reduce swelling and promote detoxification. Whereas, traditional massage primarily focuses on relaxing muscles, relieving tension, and addressing musculoskeletal issues. MLD follows a specific sequence, always beginning with the neck area where lymph fluid drains into the circulatory system. The therapist then works on lymph nodes, vessels, and capillaries in a precise order.
Lymph Drainage is most often used shortly after surgery (whether it's plastic surgery or medical surgery like for breast cancer) or in the case of a Lymphedema diagnosis. In both cases, many patients suffer from chronic swelling. For individuals with chronic swelling, lymph drainage can help with the following: 1) Reduce swelling by facilitating the movement of lymph fluid from congested areas to functioning lymph nodes. 2) Alleviate discomfort and pain associated with swollen tissues. 3) Improve circulation, which can enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery to affected area. Talk to your doctor to see if Lymph drainage is right for you.
While we don't accept insurance, 1 in 3 Americans have either a FSA or HSA card, which we accept. Also, with a doctor's prescription you could potentially get reimbursement from your insurance provider. We recommend checking first with your provider to see if reimbursement is possible for you.
Side effects post lymphatic drainage may vary vastly from that of traditional massages. For one, the drainage can have a natural diuretic effect, leading to more frequent urination and increased thirst. Some individuals may experience localized fluid buildup as the lymphatic fluid is mobilized within the body. Many people experience tiredness or drowsiness following the treatment. This is due to the stimulation of the lymphatic system and the body's detoxification process. Mild headaches can occur due to the rapid release of toxins from the body. These are all signs that the lymphatic system has been stimulated and is actively working. Some individuals notice better sleep quality following lymphatic drainage. Over time, regular sessions can lead to a decrease in overall swelling and inflammation. However, it's important to note that the absence of these effects doesn't necessarily mean the treatment didn't work. Everyone's body responds differently, and some people may experience more pronounced effects than others.
