Ashiatsu Massage

Ashiatsu DeepFeet Bar Therapy™ is a barefoot massage technique in which the therapist delivers deep, broad, consistent pressure while utilizing their feet and body weight, working with gravity instead of against it. Combining pressure and compression, the therapist strategically uses body weight and foot stance to leverage gravity for up to 3x deeper pressure than a traditional hands-on, deep tissue session.

Active Stretching

Active stretching involves using your own muscle contractions to stretch target muscle groups. By alternating between muscle contraction and relaxation, active stretching improves flexibility, range of motion, and neuromuscular control. This dynamic approach enhances athletic performance and reduces injury risk compared to static stretching alone.

Tandem Massage

Tandem Massage consists of two therapists working in unison on one patient to receive twice as much tension relief in half the time. There are two main components of tandem. Origins of Ashiatsu

Barefoot Massage dates back centuries. It’s believed that it was first developed in Kerala, India 2000 years ago by practitioners of martial arts and used as part of their training to increase flexibility and to increase recovery time from injuries.

Ashiatsu FAQ

We’re here to give you a simplistic breakdown of Ashiastu massage so you can feel confident going into your first sessions. 

In the Japanese language “Ashi” translates to foot and “Atsu” means pressure, utilizing techniques thousands of years old.  Ashiatsu therapists leverage gravity to deliver up to 3x deeper pressure than a traditional hands-on, deep tissue session. This is done usually with a bar attached to the ceiling that therapists use for balance and stability. They strategically use their body weight and foot stance to apply pressure to your body. The trained therapist uses the broad surface of the foot as their massage tool. 


Many ashiatsu stroke techniques are designed to help elongate the spine. Ashiatsu Barefoot Massage not only adds more pressure, but also compression. The compressive strokes of Ashiatsu loosen adhesions and releases connective tissues. Adhesions and tight connective tissues create much of our discomfort. Alignments go back into place. Furthermore, Ashiastu combines an array of therapeutic modalities in one session such as deep tissue, trigger point, active release, and myofascial release therapies.


Instead of depending on a therapist’s arm and hand strength, the overhead bars allow them to regulate the pressure of their entire body weight to dispense a precise variety of pressure. This allows the therapist to work a greater range of pressure and also work better angels of soft tissue manipulation. Many of the angles that are accessible using overhead bars are actually quite difficult to achieve with only their hands or forearms. Another example is utilizing heel pressure for trigger point and active release therapy. This applies concentrated and consistent pressure to a specific area with minimal effort as long as necessary for the muscle to release.


While Ashiatsu is popular among athletes, we’d like to emphasize that it’s useful for those with chronic pain, post-accident trauma, posture issues, or suffer from repetitive high-tension areas.

  1. Decreases muscle stiffness and increases range of motion. Stretching helps improve your range of motion, which may also slow the degeneration of your joints.
